Govt denies ordering closure of schools, workplaces due to COVID-19

The Ministry of Communications is refuting social media claims that the Government announced the closure of all workplaces with 50 employees or more - with paid mandatory leave - beginning March 16, 2020, and that schools will be closed for two weeks beginning March 23, 2020, to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

A brief statement from the Ministry said, "This is untrue. The Government made no such announcement."

The public is once again reminded to act responsibly and analyse all COVID-19 related information to ensure they come from reputable sources.

The release advised that verified sources of information can be found at the Ministry of Health's website at and the Ministry of Communications website at and their related social media pages.

This follows the Government's announcement on Thursday that Trinidad and Tobago has recorded its first case of the novel coronavirus. The 52-year-old patient recently returned from Switzerland and is said to be home quarantined.
