With the festive season upon us, carving time out of our hectic schedules to get the perfect Christmas present can prove to be a bit tricky.

But, wine merchants Vintage Imports is here to help by guiding you on what’s trending in the world of wine and spirits and what you should be drinking this holiday season.

Here’s expert advice from the Vintage Imports Christmas Drinkers’ Guide:

Gin is IN

No longer the spirit we associate with an older generation, Gin has made a hugely successful comeback to dominate the cocktail scene worldwide.  The introduction of new flavoured, craft and super-premium offerings, as well as the rise in popularity of quality tonic waters (such as Fever Tree) and fragrant botanicals have helped to catapult gin to the top of the spirits market over the last few years.

Vintage Imports recommends this gin recipe - a refreshing day time cocktail that’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser:

Start with a large rounded glass, topped full of ice.  Add 2 Oz of Monkey 47 Gin (or substitute with Tanqueray 10 or Beefeater), 4 oz of Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water, a fresh citrus wedge such as local lime, orange or grapefruit and compliment with a generous pinch of botanicals like Juniper Berries, Cinnamon or Cardamom.

Sparkling Never Goes Out of Style

There’s just something about popping a bottle of bubbly that turns an ordinary event into a special occasion! Champagne and Prosecco is definitely the way to go for your Christmas and New Year’s Eve events.

Spruce up your glass by adding a Wild Hibiscus Flower and a touch of syrup from the jar. The presentation adds a festive touch and pleasantly unique taste to your bubbly.

Choosing the right wine for the occasion

For seaside or DDI daytime events, the folks at Vintage Imports recommend a dry rosé wine from Provence like Minuty M. For something lighter, Beringer White Zinfandel or an Italian Pinot Grigio like the il Papavero also make for enjoyable daytime drinking.

For meal pairing, opt for smooth, food-friendly reds like Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec by Decero to accompany red meats like steak or lamb. If your menu includes seafood, chicken or pork, add a chardonnay or sauvignon blanc to the table.  Treat your guests to a small glass of 6 Grapes Port to end the meal in fine fashion.
