The process to tabulate Statements of Poll (SOP) from the recently concluded Regional and General Elections in Region Four, Guyana has been suspended.
Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Chairman Justice Claudette Singh suspended the counting on Thursday until she has time to read a judgement handed down by the Chief Justice (CJ).
Recounting began at 11 am, as ordered by the CJ on Wednesday, however it was stopped shortly after since officials objected to an attempt by the region’s Returning Officer (RO), Clairmont Mingo, to use a spreadsheet that was generated during last week’s aborted tabulation process.
In a statement, GECOM said Mingo compiled the spreadsheet using SOPs he received from polling stations in the district on March.
Mingo was given the power by CJ Roxanne George-Wiltshire to use any tabulation method he sees fit.
GECOM said it will advise citizens when counting resumes.
