Hot water for Moruga man caught stealing hot peppers

A 52-year-old man was sentenced to five years of hard labour for stealing 100 hot peppers.

Rajkumar Balkaran, a resident of Moruga, pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared before Magistrate Rae Roopchand in the Rio Claro Magistrates’ Court.

The Moruga resident was arrested on Monday afternoon in St Mary’s Village.

Reports say around 2:30 pm on Monday, Balkaran was seen along Poui Road, St Mary’s Village, removing peppers and placing them into a black bag.

When he was confronted, he attempted to flee the scene.

However, he was eventually caught by PC Ramsamooj.

The court was also told that Balkaran was a repeat offender as he had several other matters of a similar nature on his criminal record.

After further submissions, the accused was sentenced.

The State was represented by Sgt Mohammed.

PC Ramsamooj of the St Mary’s Police Post was the complainant (charging officer) in the matter.
