Hunt on for Carrera Island prison escapee

The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) has teamed up with Prison Officers and other members of the National Security forces, in search of a man who escaped the Carrera Island prison a short while ago.

Sources say the TTCG received the call just before 4 o'clock that the man, identified as Unil Phillip, escaped.

In July 2015, Phillip pleaded guilty to the charge that on October 6, 2007, he was in possession of a 16 gauge shotgun and six rounds of ammunition.

He was sentenced to six years in prison by Justice David Harris in the San Fernando Second Criminal Court and was represented by attorney Rekha Ramjit.

293 days was expected to be deducted from the sentence for the time Phillip spent in prison from the date he pleaded guilty on July 3.

However, Phillip allegedly assaulted an inmate while in custody and was expected to get an extended jail sentence. Sources believe this was why he made a dash for freedom.
