Imam among seven held for robbing, assaulting man
An Imam is among seven persons arrested by officers of the Central Division, according to a statement issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) on Sunday.
The TTPS said the arrest is in connection with a report of assault and robbery made to the Chaguanas Police Station by a Princes Town man on Thursday.
The victim reportedly told police he went to the Carapo Masjid around 10:45am, on Wednesday to meet with a man known to him.
He alleged that when the meeting ended, the man left and two other men accosted him during which he was tied up, beaten about the body and the keys to his white Nissan Tiida taken from his possession.
The men then allegedly blindfolded the victim, placed him in a vehicle and dropped him off at the Omera Industrial Estate.
The victim subsequently made a report to the police and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Following investigations, officers of the Central Division conducted an anticrime exercise in the Carapo district on Saturday, during which seven suspects were detained in connection with the incident.
The Tiida motor vehicle was also recovered during the exercise.
The suspects are expected to be placed on identification parades in connection with the incident this week.
Investigations are ongoing.
