Imbert: Lands used exclusively as places of worship will not be taxed

Finance Minister Colm Imbert says lands used exclusively as places of worship of any religious denomination will not be subject to Property Tax.

His comments come after pundit Satyanand Maharaj said puja rooms built in front of Hindu homes should be exempted from calculations of Property Tax.

Maharaj said any taxation of puja rooms would target the Hindu Community.

He made the comment as he appeared on CNC 3’s the Morning Brew on Monday.

Maharaj said a group of pundits will meet on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

“You can’t tax where I pray,” Pundit Maharaj said.

He added that there must be an exemption on places of prayer.

Last week, the Finance Minister said the Property Tax is based on the rental value of properties and not the capital value.
