Increased police presence as high-powered weapons found in Laventille
Police are expected to increase their presence in the Laventille community after high-powered weapons were seized in the district.
The weapons included an AR-15 rifle, as well as a 16-gauge shotgun.
A total of 75 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, as well as two rifle magazines and ten rounds of 16-gauge ammunition were also found and seized during the exercise.
The discovery has left senior officers in the district concerned, as it suggests that some groups were acquiring weaponry.
However, for what purpose the weapons were being ‘stock-piled’, police could not say.
The finds were made by officers of the Port of Spain District and the Besson Street Police Station, including Snr Sup Hodge Griffith, Snr Sup Danie, Sup Lancaster-Eliis, W-Inspector Powder, Inspector Brown, Cpl Kennedy, Cpl Marcellin, and PC Chinpire, among several others.
Between 10am and 2pm on Friday, the officers received intelligence which they acted on.
This intelligence led the officers to a bushy area in Mon Repos, Morvant where they discovered and seized the arms and ammunition.
No arrests were made in connection with the find, however, police are expected to send the weapons for ballistic testing to determine if they were used previously, and if it could be linked to other reports of criminal activity in the area.
