Inmates threaten to throw faeces at officers

An incident in which prisoners were allegedly holding a police officer “hostage” at the Besson Street Police Station, by preventing him from moving about freely, resulted in officers of the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB) being called in.

According to police reports, around midday on Saturday, PC Persad went to the cell block of the Besson Street Police Station, to serve a notice to a prisoner.

While there, the prisoner reportedly grabbed the police officer, and a struggle ensued.

An alarm was raised and other officers in the station responded, however, other prisoners in the cell began hurling pales of their fecal matter at the officers, threatening to douse all who came within proximity of the cell.

The GEB officers were notified, and within minutes, the lawmen, under the supervision of Snr Sup Neville Sankar, entered the station and were able to restore order.

They “rescued” PC Persad, and cordoned off the cell block.

PC Persad was later taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
