Jail for man, 23, held with firearm

A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 30 months hard labour for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Kerdel Peters appeared before San Fernando Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor where he was sentenced.

Peters made his first appearance earlier this week for the possession of a .38mm revolver, which was loaded with six rounds of ammunition.

He was held on the night of November 28, during a roadblock exercise along the SS Erin Road, in Palmiste.

He was represented by attorney Ravi Doodnath.

Doodnath asked for leniency on behalf of his client, noting that Peters plead guilty upon his first appearance and had not wasted the court’s time.

He also noted his client was apologetic for his actions.

However, after learning of other convictions in the 23-year-old’s name, including a conviction for marijuana possession, as well as the fact that Peters on his first appearance told the court he had the firearm at home and a friend took it to scare someone, a decision was made to give a custodial sentence.

This was done with the backdrop that in the present climate, several robberies, as well as capital offences, were being committed through the use of firearms.
