Jail for man who threatened Police Comissioner and his wife

A 34-year-old man, who in a phone call, threatened to chop off the heads of Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith as well as his wife Nicole, has been sentenced to two weeks in jail.

Ian Sookram, 34, of Couva, appeared on Wednesday before Magistrate Christine Charles in the Couva Court.

He pled guilty to the offence of misusing a cellular phone to send a menacing message.

Sookram was charged by ASP Michael Pierre.

Sgt Lincoln Bonnet was the complainant in the matter.

Attorney Roshni Balkaran represented  Sookram’s interests in the matter.

The court was told that Sookram had been drinking before making the phone call, and he was remorseful for his actions.

However, despite his apology, given the “grave nature of the threat” in the current climate, he was sentenced to 14 days.

The court was told that under the Summary Offences Act, Sookram could have faced up to 30 days of hard labour.

More on this as it becomes available.
