JP, Coast Guard officer among 8 in court for DUI charges

A Justice of the Peace (JP) and a Coast Guard officer are among eight people expected to appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate on Monday on charges of driving under the influence.

The JP, a 60-year-old man from Charlieville, gave a reading of 108 microgrammes when he was administered a breathalyser test. The Coast Guard officer gave a reading of 85 microgrammes.

The legal limit in this country is 35 microgrammes per 100ml of breath.

The eight were held between Friday night and Saturday morning by officers of the Central Division’s Driving Under the Influence Task Force, led by Cpl Umaid, under the supervision of Snr Sup Hunter.

A total of 40 people were tested that night during the police exercise along the Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas.

The JP, police said, faces additional charges of resisting arrest and using obscene language.
