JSC ‘troubled’ by CAL CEO’s role in recruitment of ex-Digicel workers

Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Garvin Medera failed to adhere to the State company’s established procedures regarding recruitment by not conducting mandatory background checks prior to hiring new staff and sitting on an interview panel which interviewed employees from his previous employer, Digicel TT.

In presenting its 5th Report of the Joint Select Committee on State Enterprises on an inquiry into the Administration and Operations of Caribbean Airlines Limited, the Committee on Tuesday said it was troubled by what it described as a “clear breach” of CAL’s own recruitment policy.

One of the issues the Committee highlighted was the interview process which saw around 11 former employees of Digicel Trinidad and Tobago being hired at CAL.

“Of particular concern to us are the following: The number of new managers who are former employees of Digicel Trinidad and Tobago, the former employer of the incumbent Chief Executive Officer at Caribbean Airlines Limited.

The fact that the incumbent CEO sat on the interview panel that interviewed persons from Digicel which is an obvious conflict of interest and breach of human resource practice,” JSC member Fazal Karim said.

From the Committee's inquiry, it appeared that background checks were also inconsistent for hires for senior positions.

JSC member Wade Mark was in agreement with Karim, stating that Medera ought to be taken to task for his role in those hires, especially where background checks had not been carried out or were incomplete.

The Committee called on the State enterprise to restart the process for all employees for which background checks were outstanding or yet to be completed.

Caribbean Airlines has since issued a statement defending its hiring practices.
