Sitting in their New York City apartment one day, Kathy and Karen Norman were watching the sun fade over the Hudson River, the rapidly declining peach glow lighting up the sky giving a smoldering illusion to the Manhattan skyline.

“As Manhattan burned, we thought of home. We remembered a life from a distant past, echoes of waves crashing on Maracas beach, visions of frothy bubbles kissing the shore, and the taste of salt against my lips. But even as we tried to hold onto those memories, they blurred and bled like the slices of oranges and reds that bruised the Hudson River. And as we watched Manhattan burn, and the Hudson bleed, we thought, every now and then, you just need to ESCAPE,” they said via email.

That need to escape is the philosophy behind NORMI & NORMI Inc, a new fashion house from the twin sisters known in the Carnival world as K2K. Their fashion meets mas Carnival band has been dominating the medium band of the year category since inception and  walked away with the first overall Band of the Year title in 2019.

Through their band, the sisters have sealed their reputation for their creativity, artistry and fearless design aesthetic.

NORMI continues that trend with its bold, colourful designs.

“NORMI is designed to capture romanticism but her experience is meant to make you escape,” the sisters told Loop.

“The wardrobe pieces, therefore, are crafted to enhance that sense of freedom. The garments are a mix of elegance with comfort.”

An abbreviation of their surname, NORMI & NORMI Inc is a luxury resort brand for women.

“She is crafted for every brand of beautiful. You know, Laura, as women we try to fit into the mold of perfection. Many of us want to be slim. Some of us botox our lips, others go under the knife to enhance the original package. We try to fit into this idealist mold that society carves out as beautiful. But the truth is, the diversity of “woman” as a group, the fact that the packaging is so different, (i.e., we are Black, Indian, White, Chinese, mixed; we are slim, thick and plus size; and our list of differences goes on) is what makes the diaspora of women beautiful,” the sisters said.

They added: “Beauty is a package. It is more than the external gift-wrapping. At NORMI we strive to say, ‘I’m beautiful in my skin’ and my imperfections make me perfect. With that said, many of the garments are easy-to-wear. We use a lot of silky chiffons and silks. These are fabrics that caress the skin, the aim being to make you feel feminine and sensual.”

The NORMI line is traditional and positioned as a brand that focuses on timeless and effortless glamour. Prices range from US$450 to US$750.

NORMI is an affiliate of K2K Alliance & Partners and was developed to expand K2K’s platform but the two will be completely separate entities, with their own focus, branding, and identity.

“What both brands share, is a commitment to producing artfully crafted garments for her clients. However, NORMI’s core difference is that she will provide effortless yet glamorous wardrobe statements for women. NORMI will reflect more lifestyle choices, She will initially focus on luxury resort-wear for women, with a vision of branching out into others,” the sisters said.

The Capsule Collections will also offer a wider range of unique prints versus solely focusing on prints used in past Carnival Collection.

NORMI privé, which will house one-off more avant-garde designs for formal occasions, is also in the works.

Understanding that women come in all sizes, the sisters said that are committed to providing sizes for a wide market and if you do not see your size online, they encourage clients to send an email to info@normi-normi.com

The sisters will showcase some of the pieces from NORMI at the premiere of K2K’s 2020 “The Greatest Show”.

K2K’s show will be at the Queen’s Hall on Friday, August 30.

The dress code is elegant. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the show will begin at 8:30 pm.
