Kamla commends ‘trailblazer’ Mottley on landslide election win

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has extended thanks to Barbados Prime Minister-elect Mia Mottley on her party’s 30-0 victory at the polls.

The Mottley-led Barbados Labour Party (BLP) made a clean sweep when Barbados held its general election on Thursday.

In offering well wishes to the next Prime Minister of Barbados, Opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said BLP’s victory at the polls serves as an inspiration to women and girls, and shattered yet another glass ceiling.

“Our region has much to be proud of as you stand as a trailblazer in women’s political participation and indeed leadership,” Persad-Bissessar.

She also noted that May 24 was a date close to her heart as the People’s Partnership Government claimed victory at the polls on that day in 2010.

“It is a source of great pleasure for me to congratulate you as I am sure you aware, we now share a common place in our hearts for May 24.”

Persad-Bissessar went on to commend Mottley for her political prowess.

“The significance of your landslide victory cannot be understated, CARICOM and indeed the world looked on in awe, not only as you became Barbados’ first woman Prime Minister but also leading your Party to capturing all 30 seats.  You have built a formidable record in the political arena, and your determination to succeed, your acumen and strength of spirit are admirable.

I extend personal congratulations to you on your historic victory in capturing your own seat of St. Michael North East with more than 4 000 votes.”

“It is my hope and prayer that you will be blessed with good health and continuing good judgement that will allow you to discharge your duties effectively and to the benefit of your countrymen. I noted with great joy in your victory speech that you declared your win as a victory for the people of Barbados and, indeed I know you will serve them well,” the Opposition leader concluded.
