Despite the People’s National Movement (PNM) declaring victory in the 2020 General Election, Political Leader of the United National Congress, Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she is not conceding defeat.

She says she intends to demand recounts in at least three marginal constituencies.

In a video posted to social media, Persad-Bissessar says her team fought a good fight but refused to concede.

“I am not giving any concessionary speech, I am not conceding. Our candidates in several of the marginals [are] filing for recounts and because the numbers are so close, those recounts will be done and only then can we concede or claim victory,” she says.

Persad-Bissessar thanked her supporters for standing by her side and encouraged them to remain steadfast. She congratulated Barry Padarath on retaining his Princes Town seat and Michelle Benjamin for making easy work of Moruga/Tableland.

She admits that the party could have done better, but expressed pride nonetheless.

As it stands, the UNC lost the general election 22-19 to the PNM whose leader Dr Keith Rowley has already declared victory.
