Former United National Congress (UNC) senator and attorney-at-law Larry Lalla has joined the call by some for Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar to step away from the leadership of the UNC.
He issued the call one day after Persad-Bissessar was reappointed as the Leader of the Opposition.
She told reporters the fact that she accepted the appointment was a clear indicator that she had no plans to step down.
The UNC leader added the party's internal election will take place when it is due.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Lalla said after two successive General Election defeats and many others on either side of those, the time has long past for there to be a change of leadership and direction in the party.
He said: "Today I add my voice to those of Dr Fuad Khan, Mr Vasant Bharath, Mr Devant Maharaj, Mr Vashist Maharaj, Mr Kelvin Ramkissoon, Mr Lester Orie and many others and say the time has come for Mrs Kamla Persad Bissessar SC to gracefully follow the example set by Dr Tim Gopeesingh and to step away from leadership of the United National Congress."
Lalla added a political leader of a party must always be a trustee of her or his party and must always put the interests of the party, it’s members and the country above self and self interests.
