Cleaning and desilting of waterways along with the installation of sediment traps and check dams can help mitigate flooding.

At the UNC’s virtual political meeting On the Ballot on Thursday night, Persad-Bissessar chastised the Government for not making the requisite preparations to prevent flooding, especially as Tropical Storm Gonzalo could bring heavy rains and devastating floods.

She assured citizens that the UNC has a robust flood prevention plan in the event of the occurrence of such a natural disaster.

The UNC leader said the party will assist citizens affected by any flooding brought on by the weather system.

“I promise you the UNC will be on the ground should there be any damage should there be the need to help our citizens, we will be the first out on the ground, should anything happen.”

She indicated that all UNC controlled corporations have already been put on alert should Gonzalo develop into a hurricane and the need arise for assistance to be provided.

Persad-Bissessar said the water collected by the flood gates and other devices could be used for agricultural purposes, or even purified to be used to top up reservoirs.

“What can we do with that excess water? Every time you tell me the dam empty this will be water trapped and kept not to flood lands, but to be used… whether for agricultural access, whether for normal drinking water, agricultural use or so on.”

Persad-Bissessar said the full flood mitigation plan can be accessed at uncplan2020.com
