Kidnap suspect still being questioned
A 31-year-old man from El Socorro who is in custody in relation to the alleged kidnapping of a Chinese national, is expected to be questioned again this morning.
Investigators said they were hopeful to bring the suspect before a Port of Spain Magistrate on Monday, however, more procedures needed to be conducted and as such, it is not clear on if the suspect will be brought before the courts as planned.
The suspect was detained on Thursday after a Chinese national was kidnapped in the vicinity of Hayes Street, St Clair.
The man, employed as part of the support staff at the Chinese embassy, was standing on the roadway when the incident occurred at about 7:30 am on Thursday.
The Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Port of Spain Division Criminal Investigations Department, Port of Spain Division, Western Division, Rapid Response Branch, Criminal Gang and Investigations Unit and Emergency Branch and other units from the National Security Ministry responded.
A $20,000 ransom was demanded and police continued their vigilance within the area and later intercepted a vehicle just after 10:00 am that day in the vicinity of Damien Street, St James.
The hostage was rescued unhurt from the back seat of a stolen vehicle.
