Updated: One arrested as kidnapped family rescued
A family of four kidnapped from their Penal home on Saturday has been rescued.
Police Commissioner Gary Griffith confirmed that several operational units rescued the Penal family at South Oropouche Trace, Barrackpore around 11.40 am on Sunday .
One man has been rescued following "intense and sustained joint search operations" by several arms of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) over the past 24 hours.
The Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKU), Special Operations Response Team (SORT), Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB) and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) were called in to find the family, an operation supported and coordinated by the National Command Centre.
Relatives contacted police after 28-year-old Aaron Sooknanan, his Venezuelan-born wife Paula Sooknanan and their two children; 5-year-old Ricardo and 3-year-old Isabella could not be found.
Their home had been broken into and ransacked.
The suspect remains in police custody and is being interviewed at this time.
