La Brea pensioner freed of rape 13 years later
A 72-year-old man from La Brea has been freed of rape and sexual assault charges against a 12-year-old girl, 13 years after being charged with the crimes.
Bennett Julien was freed of the three charges in the San Fernando High Court on Wednesday.
It was reported that that on a day unknown between August and October 2005, the girl went over to the man’s home and he sexually penetrated her with his fingers.
It was also alleged that when the girl went over to his home for a second time, he committed the act again while her sister was using his telephone.
He was accused of then having sex with her.
After three hours of deliberation, however, a nine-member jury found Julien not guilty on all three counts.
The State was represented by attorney Sabrina Dougdeen-Jaglal.
Julien was defended by Attorney Subhas Panday.
