Laventille couple arrested for assaulting police officer

A Laventille couple is in police custody after they allegedly assaulted police officers during an operation this morning.

According to police reports, at about 4am today, officers made their way to Building 2, Apartment 3/4, Plaisance Terrace, Laventille, where they attempted to execute a search warrant on a couple.

However, police said that the couple – a 36-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman – refused to allow the officers entry to their home, despite being showed a warrant.

This resulted in the officers forcing their way into the home.

Upon entry, the 36-year-old man confronted the officers, and assaulted a police constable. Police said the officer was slapped, and punched.

While trying to arrest the man, the 25-year-old woman held on to the arresting officer, and attempted to prevent them from detaining her husband.

This led to both suspects being arrested and taken into custody.

The injured officer was taken for medical treatment, while the suspects were taken to the Barataria police station where they are to be questioned, following which, they will be charged.
Cpl Phillip is continuing inquiries.
