Local Gov't Minister: Councillor's passing a shock to all

Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Kazim Hosein, said the loss of Belmont East Councillor Darryl Rajpaul will be a hard one to bear. 

Rajpaul died on Saturday, after attending a football game that evening. His cause of death is not yet confirmed however it was thought to be due to illness. 

In a statement, Hosein said his passing came as a shock and he will be sorely missed by his peers, friends and family. 

"On behalf of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the beloved Councillor for the Electoral District of Belmont East, Darryl Rajpaul."

“Councillor Rajpaul served with humility, and he remained committed to God and his family in all aspects of his life. His legacy of always bringing people together, and being a strong advocate of peace through sports is one that we must all hold dear and carry on in his memory," he said.

Hosein said Rajpaul was "a true servant of the people who was well-respected by all" and was described by members of Council and Administration of the Port of Spain City Corporation as a passionate, unrelenting and focus-driven individual who championed the upliftment of youth through various sport-related programs geared towards community development and improving the lives of his burgesses.

“Councillor Rajpaul’s passing comes as a shock to the Local Government fraternity and by extension the People’s National Movement (PNM) family."

"Together, we mourn the great loss of a passionate, humble, philanthropic man who served his burgesses with great dedication. The Port of Spain City Council will uphold their duty as representatives elected by the people, to ensure that the burgesses of his district continue to receive the excellent service which Councillor Darryl Rajpaul practised.”

Minister Haji Kazim Hosein encouraged the Council, headed by Mayor Joel Martinez, to carry on Councillor Rajpaul’s legacy of unity through sport.

"I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones and my prayers are with them at this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace," Hosein said.
