Man, 60, goes on drunken birthday joyride in stolen car
A 60-year-old man who took his birthday celebrations too far by stealing and crashing a vehicle last Thursday, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Fitzroy Thomas was slapped with three charges, including larceny of a motor vehicle, failing to produce a permit to police, driving without a permit, and driving without insurance.
He plead guilty to all the offences when the matter was called before Senior Magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.
The court was told that the incident took place around 4.10 am on Thursday.
The victim left his white Nissan AD Wagon, valued at TT$75,000, parked along Cipero Street, San Fernando with the engine running.
Moments later, he saw the vehicle being driven away.
A short while later, police received a report of an accident along Bertrand Street, San Fernando, in which the wagon had hit another car.
When police arrived at the location, they detained Thomas.
During his court appearance, Thomas apologised for his actions, however, he said that he was drunk and for some reason when he saw the car idling, he thought he would just “make a block and take a drive”.
The court noted that a background tracing on the 60-year-old father of three revealed that he had at least three convictions over a ten-year period, for offences including possession of cocaine, larceny, and malicious damage to property.
Antoine indicated that due to these aggravating factors, she had no choice but to impose a custodial sentence.
