Man to be charged for the murder of Bassie Sooknanan
Police have received instructions to charge a 53-year-old man for the murder of Bassie Sooknanan.
On Friday, investigators at the Homicide Bureau Region III visited officials at the Director of Public Prosecutions for instructions on how to proceed.
After the files on the investigation were reviewed, officers received instructions to charge the 53-year-old man.
Sooknanan, 53, was a mother of two, and a grandmother of one.
She was fatally stabbed and chopped while at her home on the night of April 26, at Persad Avenue, Cunupia.
According to police reports, around 10.40 pm that day, officers of the Central Division received information about a domestic disturbance.
The lawmen visited the address they were given and upon their arrival, they found Sooknanan’s body on the floor of the couple’s home.
She appeared to have been chopped several times.
Near her body was that of her husband.
Police said he was frothing from his mouth and had a wound to his throat.
It was suspected that he ingested a poisonous substance.
The 53-year-old man was rushed for medical treatment where he was treated and eventually discharged.
