Man beaten after allegedly luring child: 'Come baby, I am your cousin'
An unidentified man is currently listed in a critical condition after he was severely beaten by residents of Oropune Gardens, Piarco when he allegedly tried to lure a six-year-old girl away from her family and friends.
According to police reports, at about 9:00 pm Wednesday, officers of the Arouca Police Station responded to a report that a man was lying unconscious on the ground near Oropune Gardens.
Officers were told that about an hour earlier, the unidentified man had attempted to lure a six-year-old girl away from her group by telling her, “come baby come, you are my cousin”.
The six-year-old girl however fled and informed her parents. The girl’s mother confronted the man, and there was said to be a struggle between the two.
The man then fled the scene, and hid in some bushes.
The woman raised an alarm and residents of the area set fire to bushes in the area in an attempt to lure out the individual. When he ran out, he was caught by a mob and beaten.
The man was said to have been beaten about the body so much that he fell unconscious.
The police and emergency health services were notified and the wounded man was rushed to the Arima District Health Facility and then to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
Up to 9:00 am Thursday he was said to still be in a critical condition.
The matter is being investigated by Cpl Abraham and PC Charles, among several others.
Several statements have been taken, and the scene was processed by Crime Scene Investigators.
