Man drowns at Maracas beach as life guards strike
A 29-year-old Penal man died after he got into difficulty at Maracas beach on Sunday, with no lifeguard nearby to save him.
Raj Sonnylal was employed with Lifestyle Motors.
He and his family took an outing to Maracas beach, however, around 11:15 am, they got into difficulty while in the water.
The group left the water and turned back to realise that Sonnylal was not with them.
They sought the assistance of lifeguards but were told that they were on strike, due to health and safety issues.
Meanwhile, lifeguards from the nearby Las Cuevas Beach took 30 minutes to respond after Sonnylal was brought to shore.
Officers from the Maracas Police Station came to assist but foreigners from the US Marines began doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Sonnylal until the lifeguards showed up.
He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by Emergency Health Services where he died overnight.
In a Facebook post, Lifestyle Motors expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of their colleague.
"Raj Sonnylal, gone too soon. The Lifestyle Motors family would like to take this opportunity to express our condolences to Raj's family. friends and coworkers. Our prayers are with you as we say goodbye to a young man who has impacted us all," the post said.
