Man fakes marriage to teen, faces magistrate for sex with minor
A 46-year-old man has appeared before a Sangre Grande magistrate charged with a sexual offence against a 15-year-old girl.
The suspect has been identified as Irsaan Najmudeen of Lobin Trace, Fishing Pond, Sangre Grande.
The child is from the Princes Town area and will remain unidentified for her safety.
According to reports, the victim’s mother visited a police station around 1 pm on June 15 and reported that her teenage daughter was at a sister’s home in Sangre Grande during the school vacation when she had sex with the neighbour.
She told police that her daughter believed she was married to the accused under Muslim rites on April Fools' Day (April 1). This ceremony was done without the consent of her parents.
However, sources say while the girl was convinced, no evidence was found to legitimise the marriage. The officers were also unable to arrest the “imam” as the bill which made child marriage illegal was assented to in June.
Investigations continued and officers photographed the scene and recorded statements but, Najmudeen refused them entry into his home.
Investigators subsequently attained a search warrant to enter the property to continue gathering evidence.
Najmudeen was arrested and charged on September 26 and appeared before a Sangre Grande Magistrate on September 27 for one count of sexual penetration. The matter was adjourned to October 1 for mention as bail was denied due to the absence of a judge.
Investigations were led by WPC Skeete, WPC Baptiste, Sgt Bain-Keller and included WPC Scott and WPC Williams-James.
