Man hospitalised after shooting near Barataria school

A man who is thought to be mentally ill was hospitalised following a police shooting on Friday morning near a Barataria school.

While information is still coming in, police said that the incident took place around 7.30 am near the Barataria South Secondary School.

A man, who remained unidentified up to 10 am, ran into the compound of the school where he was confronted by security guards, who notified the police.

The officers arrived on scene, after which reports indicate the man became violent resulting in one of the lawmen pulling out his firearm and shooting at the individual.

The injured man was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Complex where he was treated.

He is currently listed in a stable condition.

This incident comes less than 24 hours after Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith sent a release indicating his support behind the use of tasers by police officers for neutralising threats.
