Man pretending to be police officer charged with fraud

A 44-year-old man, who pretended to be a senior superintendent of police to defraud businessmen, has been charged and brought before a San Fernando Magistrate.

The accused is Navin Jaikaran of Seventh Avenue, Barataria.

It is alleged that he obtained $10,000 from a businessman by menace.

He appeared before Magistrate Jo Anne Connor and Corporal Mitchell was the complainant (charging officer) in the matter.

The charge was laid indictably and Jaikaran was not called upon to enter a plea.

After further submissions in the court, bail was granted at $40,000.

The matter is expected to be recalled on October 23.

Jaikaran was held following a sting operation on Monday led by  Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Totaram Dookhie and involving Inspector Hill and Corporal Joefield.

Police had received information that a man had been bullying businessmen in the La Romaine area.

More on this as it becomes available.
