Man sentenced to 15 months for courthouse attack

A 33-year-old man, who attacked and wounded another prisoner at the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, has been sentenced to 15 months hard labour.

Nigel McSween, or Pierre Trace, Enterprise, was charged with wounding Makil Simon, 29, of Kestrel Boulevard, Edinburgh 500.

He plead guilty to the offence, and after the facts were read out, the 33-year-old man, who was already in remand awaiting trial on other offences, was sentenced.

The court was told that about 9.55am on Tuesday McSween was at the courthouse when he got into a confrontation with Simon. He pulled out an “improvised weapon”, namely a sharpened piece of metal, and attacked Simon.

Simon suffered a wound above his left eye.

However, the swift response of court and process officers prevented any further injuries.

The accused was detained and processed, while Simon was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility where he was treated and discharged.
