Man sentenced to one year in jail for assaulting wife
A 42-year-old man who assaulted his wife on two occasions in a matter of days will spend the next 12 months in jail.
The accused, Christopher Lall, was charged with two counts of assault.
The charges were laid by PC Lall (who is of no relation to the accused).
Sgt Cleyon Seedan represented the interests of the State in this matter which was called before Magistrate Alicia Chankar in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.
The court was told that one of the incidents took place on Sunday morning at the couple’s home at Lady Hailes Avenue, San Fernando.
The accused, Lall, later told investigators that his wife was provoking him and he slapped her, but he did not intend to.
Then on Tuesday morning, Lall was with his wife when they got into another argument. On this occasion, he allegedly slapped the woman and hit her several times.
The woman made a report to the police and sought medical treatment.
Lall was arrested.
When the matter was called on Thursday, Lall plead guilty to the offences. He was sentenced to 12 months of hard labour for each count levied against him.
However, the sentences were ordered to run concurrently, and as a result, he will only serve one year in prison.
