Man shot and killed near Port of Spain General Hospital

Police rushed to the scene in response to a report of a shooting in Port of Spain, the latest in a series of killings.

Although information is still coming in, the incident was said to have taken place along Charlotte Street near the Port of Spain General Hospital.

The incident occurred just after midday, around 1:30 pm Thursday.

Emergency responders were still at the scene up to 2:00 pm Thursday.

The man, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene.

In a separate incident, another man was reportedly shot in Diego Martin and was taken to hospital.

The incident allegedly occurred along Diego Martin Main Road near La Puerta Avenue.

Police presence remained heavy in the capital after several reports of shootings and the deaths of several people within a 24-hour period.

Within recent weeks, eight people were killed in unrelated incidents over a 24-hour period.

The spate of violence is being met with heavy resistance from police, who carried out several exercises in Port of Spain overnight.

Video footage showed police carrying out an exercise near St Paul Street, Port of Spain, after rapid gunfire was heard.

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith said the gang violence can only stop by cutting funding to gang leaders, who are allegedly receiving State contracts to fund their criminal operations.
