Man shot dead attempting to rob police officer
A 27-year-old man was shot dead on Monday when he attempted to rob a police officer.
He has been identified as Tesfa Exesus Wright of Winston Mulligan Drive, Phase Four, La Horquetta.
Police said that around 1.35pm, the 37-year-old officer, who is attached to the Mounted Branch at Chagauramas, was driving his Nissan Frontier north along Winston Mulligan Drive, when he observed a masked man approaching him.
The man had a firearm in his hand.
On realizing what was about to happen the officer sped away a short distance while securing his licensed weapon.
He them stopped the vehicle, exited, and confronted the suspect.
According to reports, instead of surrendering, Wright opened fire on the officer.
The officer returned fire, hitting Wright in his lower body.
The assailant ran a short distance and collapsed.
The officer notified police, and the injured man was rushed to the Arima District Health Facility.
However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A firearm and a mask was seized on the scene of the shooting by CSI personnel.
