At the beginning of the year, Stephen Mc Clashie didn’t envision himself to be a parliamentary representative, far less so, the Minister of Labour. Despite the shock, Mc Clashie says he’s prepared to be an advocate for change and he intends to keep as many people employed as possible.

In an interview with Loop News, Mc Clashie said that updating Labour laws, maintaining positive relationships with trade unions and keeping Trinidad and Tobago employed are his priorities.

With laws on our books dating back to the 1940’s, Mc Clashie explained the importance of ensuring that T&T keeps up with the International Labour Organisation’s standards.

In addition, as COVID-19 still poses a problem, pandemic leave is also a front burner issue. Mc Clashie intends to use his influence as Labour Minister to have private sector organisations give consideration to the need for pandemic leave. He also hopes that more creative working conditions become the norm so that productivity isn’t lost.
