Medical intern dismissed following racist remarks on Facebook
The Ministry of Health has terminated the services of the medical intern whose racist remarks went viral on social media in early June.
In a release, the Ministry of Health confirmed that, after careful consideration of all the relevant facts and the terms of the Internship Agreement, it officially terminated the services of Dr Dhelia Gabriel with effect from Friday 6 July.
Gabriel, a medical intern who was assigned to the Port of Spain General Hospital, had been removed from active duty on Tuesday 12 June, as the Ministry of Health launched an investigation into allegations of racist comments made by the young intern on Facebook.
The Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association expressed concern over the comments, which had been posted to Gabriel’s personal profile as well as on some public groups.
The Ministry, in a release, said that in accordance with the individual’s right to confidentiality, no details of this matter will be discussed by the Ministry in the public domain.
