Mentally ill man held after domestic incident in Arima

One man is in custody after he allegedly held his family ‘hostage’ in Arima on Wednesday morning.

Information is still coming in on the incident, however, the suspect is said to be a man suffering from mental illness. 

Police were told the man is living with relatives along Harrinanan Avenue, Malabar.

From initial reports, subject to further updates, the man begun “acting-up” around 11.30 am and would not allow his relatives to leave the home.

He was said to be throwing items and had armed himself with a weapon.

The police were notified and officers from the Northern Division Task Force, the Guard and Emergency Branch, and other specialized units responded.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody.

None of the relatives sustained any serious injuries, police said.
