Minister urged to investigate claims at SFGH maternal ward

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh is being urged to look into reports of expectant mothers being forced to wait in wheelchairs at the delivery room at the San Fernando General Hospital, before giving birth.

In a statement, San Juan/Barataria MP Dr Fuad Khan says there has been no substantive development or enrichment of the lives of citizens in the past year, and now there have reportedly been incidents of mothers being forced to endure sub-standard conditions at the San Fernando Maternal Ward.

Khan claims that there are reports of women are being sent home due to the situation, where they are then forced to give birth to their children.

He says this added stress and anxiety can not only create unnecessary burden on the pregnant women, but also complicate their pregnancies and the delivery process.

The shortage of beds did not only affect these mothers, but also their new-born babies, as the post-natal ward was also operating at full capacity, Khan stated.

The MP says the babies are also being forced to share the wheelchair and bed space with their mothers after they are born.

Khan says the Minister’s intervention is needed to ensure that alternative accommodations are put in place for these expectant mothers.

“The undertaking of childbirth is already complicated and delicate enough without the complications that these mothers are being made to endure and as such, it is the duty of the Minister and the hospital administrators to establish the appropriate resolution to reduce the additional risk that this situation is creating,” Khan concluded.
