Health Ministry carries out 'Surgical Sundays' to tackle backlog

The Health Ministry has begun 'Surgery Sundays' in order to tackle a backlog of urgent surgeries.

According to a statement issued over the weekend, the initiative, which is being initiated by the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA), started on November 12 and will utilize four Operating Theatres by four teams of surgeons at the EWMSC every other Sunday.

The Ministry said so far, 31 people needing surgery for hernias have benefitted from the program, and an additional 20 persons are scheduled for surgery on Sunday December 10, 2017.

The Authority expects to institutionalize the Surgical Sundays initiative so it will be an ongoing program offered by the NCRHA.

Deyalsingh added that the Ministry intends to dedicate one month in 2018 to cataract surgeries in order to deal with that backlog.

Also present on Sunday was NCRHA Chairman Steve De Las, Chief Executive Officer (Ag), Davlin Thomas, Senior Clinical Staff, patients who have benefitted from the program as well as members of the surgical team.
