Ministry reminds public of funding availability for natural disasters
The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services is seeking to advise and remind the general public that grant funding is available to persons who are affected by natural and man-made disasters.
The reminder comes following the recently publicised land erosion which occurred at Bois Burg Village, Cedros on Monday, which left 20 people homeless and forced the evacuation of families.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry said it was aware of the five affected families which have been assessed by the Disaster Management Unit of the Siparia Regional Corporation.
It said to provide the necessary follow up action on services and grants that can be accessed from the Ministry, the details of the matters concerning the affected families have been referred to the Social Welfare Division.
Ministry staff will work with the affected families to ensure that the necessary services are delivered so as to return their life to normalcy.
The grants available are outlined below:
1 Housing Assistance/Repairs Grants to a maximum of $20,000.00 for persons who may require housing repairs due to destruction to their homes following a natural disaster
2 A Household Grant to a maximum of up to $10,000.00 to assist with the replacement of household items lost as a result a natural disaster
These items include:
3 Living Room/Dining Room Sets
4 Washing Machines
5 Bed and Mattress
6 Chest of Drawers
8 Kitchen Cupboards
9 Temporary Food Support is provided where food items were lost/destroyed
10 School Supplies Grant which is valued at $700.00 for Primary Schoolers and $1,000.00 for Secondary Schoolers respectively, to replace school supplies which are lost as a result of a natural disaster
11 Counseling and psycho-social support are available to families and individuals in distress as a result of a natural disaster, from the National Family Services Division (NFSD), which is located at 95 -97 Frederick Street, Port of Spain (at the Law Association Bldg. opposite Elections and Boundaries Commission). The public is also reminded that the procedure for disaster relief funding includes needs assessments which will be conducted by the Regional Corporations and this information will be communicated to the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, where verification will quickly take place to provide the necessary relief.
