Ministry of Social Dev outlines disaster relief grants, support

Ministry of Social Development and Family Services has activated its Disaster Management Response Team and Volunteer Network to bring assistance to those affected by flooding.

Persons whose household appliances have been damaged by flood waters are being urged not to discard those items until an assessment is done.

The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services will be conducting assessments of damaged appliances and furniture, as well as damage to homes’ electrical wiring and sanitation plumbing.

This will enable residents to apply for disaster relief grants administered by the Ministry.  

As a second Responder, the Ministry remains vigilant and is ready to work closely with its key disaster stakeholders including the first responders – the ODPM, as well as the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government’s Disaster Management Units (DMUs), to assess reported cases so that immediate assistance could be rendered.

The Ministry’s response includes psychosocial support and counselling,  immediate food support, clothing grant, as well as assistance towards replacing damaged household items like refrigerators, washing machines, bed and mattresses and more, in an effort to bring relief to affected individuals and households.

It should be noted that only claims for the following household items are accepted for Disaster Management Relief:

Refrigerator

Stove

Living Room Set

Dining Room Set

Washing Machine

Bed (With Mattress)

Mattress

Chest of Drawers

Wardrobe

Kitchen Cupboard

 

The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services says it remains committed to ensuring that the necessary resources are mobilised and equipped to bring restoration and a sense of normalcy to affected families in the shortest possible time.
