Mitchell meets Machel to discuss tourism
Tourism Minister Randall Mitchell met with Soca superstar Machel Montano at the Ministry of Tourism on Friday morning and they have agreed to find definitive ways to collaborate on initiatives to promote our country’s tourism offerings, including Soca Music, internationally.
Mitchell said: “We must continue the conversation and really push our unique offerings globally. We will continue to discuss initiatives through our new destination marketing company, Tourism Trinidad Ltd."
The Ministry extended the invitation to Montano in recognition of his reach and influence. According to Mitchell, Montano “is not just an entertainer but a creative and an innovator who, through his creative efforts, has transformed the carnival calendar in T&T. He is always improving his product and sets a very high standard for the industry.”
Mitchell thanked Montano for unofficially promoting Trinidad and Tobago's culture and our destination to our benefit for decades and expressed his interest in working with him to advance the country’s tourism product.
Minister Mitchell was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of Trinidad Tourism Limited, Camille Campbell, while Montano’s manager, Che Kothar was also present. Campbell also noted the value of partnering and identified that Montano’s media archives could be integrated into the promotion of our tourism product globally.
During the 45-minute meeting, Montano told Minister Mitchell that the country’s culture had the potential for generating significant economic benefits for the country, adding that for years focus was placed on the oil and sugar industries while insufficient attention was given to the country’s music and culture. He said tradition and technology must be brought together in the interest of advancing the culture in T&T.
