Moonilal sent to Privileges Committee over ‘threatening’ remark

Oropouche East MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal has been sent to the Privileges Committee over statements he made in the House of Representatives on October 10.

Moonilal is alleged to have said, “Snake have some lead for you,” during a heated argument with Laventille West MP Fitzgerald Hinds during the sitting.

Leader of the House Camille Robinson-Regis raised the matter on October 15.

In giving her judgment on the matter in Parliament on Frida, House Speaker Brigid Annisette-George said she has since viewed the video footage and listed to the audio recorded during the sitting and has also read the Hansard of the proceedings.

She said the words attributed to the Oropouche East MP were in fact uttered.

The Speaker of the House said there is no place for threatening language in the House.

“The matter raised by the Member for Arouca Maloney is a serious one, as there is absolutely no place for violent or threatening language in this House.

The statement made, when placed into context as presented by the Member for Arouca Maloney, clearly falls below the esteem and dignity of the Parliament,” Annisette-George said.

The Speaker of the House ruled that the matter should be sent to the Privileges Committee.

“Therefore, having considered the submission made by the Member for Arouca Maloney, and in accordance with my duty under Standing Order 32(4), I rule that a prima facie case of breach of privilege has been made out, and that the incident requires further consideration by the Committee of Privileges.”
