Flashback: Dead fish washing ashore at Chaguaramas, May 11, 2017
The Calypso Marina, Chaguaramas is reportedly covered with dead fish.
This is the second reported sighting of dead fish washing ashore in the area in the space of two weeks.
Fishermen and Friends of the Sea (FFOS) has disputed reports coming from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) that the initial sightings of dead fish species in the area was as a result of dumping.
The group is of the view that more testing and analysis of these waters is required to determine what is killing the fish.
The FFOS says conclusions should not be based on ad hoc information and should not be made without proper scientific investigations.
“Unless the IMA are transparent in its findings the fishers and the fish consumers will be placed at great health risks,” it warned.
It has again appealed to the Line Ministers of these organisations to ensure proper scientific conduct and detailed investigations are conducted.
