Moruga house destroyed by fire after child plays with matches

Twelve persons are now homeless after a fire in Moruga on Monday night.

Unfortunately, from initial information, it appears that the fire was caused by a seven-year-old girl who was playing with matches.

According to police reports, at about 7.30 pm on Monday, smoke was seen coming from the back of the two-storey home.

An alarm was raised, and the occupants of the home – which was said to be separated into two apartments, one on the upper floor and one on the ground – were evacuated.

Appliances from the Princes Town Fire Station responded and they were bale to contain the blaze before it spread to nearby structures.

The seven-year-old eventually admitted to her mother that she was playing with matches by a mattress and it is suspected that this would have been the cause of the fire.

However, fire officers were expected to return to the scene of the blaze on Tuesday to officially determine the cause.

PC Buchoon is continuing investigations.

More on this as it becomes available.
