MP accuses Gov't of manipulating scholarship awardees list
Opposition MP Dr Tim Gopeesingh is calling on Education Minister Anthony Garcia to urgently explain why the Ministry is unable to provide the list of scholarship awardees in mid-November when the CAPE results were available in August.
This follows Garcia’s statement to members of the media after the post-cabinet news conference on Thursday that efforts are still being made to select the right beneficiaries.
The Government selects no more than 400 scholarship winners annually.
In a release on Friday, Gopeesingh who is the former Education Minister accused the state body of attempting to manipulate the results of CAPE examinations.
“The curious decision to hold back the results means this would be the latest in recent history that scholarship award winners would be named. As a result, fingers are being pointed at the Keith Rowley-headed Cabinet for allegedly undermining and influencing the results.”
Gopeesingh said Garcia has failed to provide a plausible reason for the decision to withhold the names of students who have qualified for National Scholarships.
He said under his Government led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the results were released as early as September 19 in 2013.
“He [Garcia] must state why the results have been stalled at the Cabinet, and whether this is simply the result of the customary gross inefficiencies of the Rowley Government.”
“Until the Minister can assure the country that there is no interference with the list of scholarship winners, the Government would remain accused of fiddling with the results.”
