MP calls for Education Minister's dismissal
Caroni East MP Dr Tim Gopeesingh is calling for the dismissal of Education Minister Anthony Garcia.
The MP accused the Minister of not being a man of his word when it comes to the future of the country’s students.
Gopeesingh, a former Education Minister believes Garcia is ill-suited to lead the education sector in an era of globalisation, innovation and in the march toward a knowledge-based economy.
He says the Minister’s “obvious incompetence and professional recklessness” has affected the education of the country’s students, which he believes has affected the “gains” made in the education sector under the previous People’s Partnership government.
The MP is urging Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley “in the interest of the country’s students”, to relieve Garcia of his post as Education Minister.
He expressed concerns over the state of disrepair at a number of the nation’s schools, which he says have led to major disruptions in learning as these institutions are reportedly “not fit for occupation” by students and teachers.
Gopeesingh knocked the supposed delay on the vacation repair programme and what he describes as the Minister’s finding himself in “senseless verbal tangles with various denominational school administrators and is engaging in PNM-style finger-pointing.”
He claims that there’s a crisis at the nation’s schools compounds and other education issues under Garcia’s watch, citing the laptop distribution programme, the Continuous Assessment Component and other issues.
