MP calls for Garcia's removal over UWI Chancellor 'blunder'
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley is being urged to spare the country “any more of the failed and hopeless” Education Minister following the early announcement of a new Chancellor of the University of the West Indies.
Minister Anthony Garcia at Thursday’s Post Cabinet media briefing announced that businessman Robert Bermudez was selected as the new Chancellor, before a final decision has been made by the University. That final decision is expected to be made April 27, at the Annual Business Meeting of University Council.
Caroni East MP and former education minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh has again called for Garcia’s removal as minister over the “horrible blunder” as he says it reflects a “new level of incompetence” from the “inept” Garcia.
Gopeesingh said the error has embarrassed the University and caused the Rowley-led Cabinet more ridicule and derision.
“Mr. Garcia’s tenure has been indicated by the lowering of academic standards, withdrawal of vital learning features and support systems and one administrative gaffe after another.
That track record of non-performance has now been compounded by his blatant attempt to arrogate the authority of the University Council in the appointment of a Chancellor. The misstep is atrocious and appalling, even by Mr. Garcia’s low standards.
His attempts to blame his Cabinet colleagues and to seek endorsement for his inappropriate action from his Ministry further expose Mr. Garcia’s abject lack of fitness for public office.”
Gopeesingh further stated that as Minister Garcia would have advised the Cabinet on the matter, so he must be held directly responsible for the announcement of the appointment of Bermudez.
The former minister added that a timely public apology must be issued to UWI and to the regional community that it serves.
