Narrow escape for elderly man after Barataria shooting

Police are investigating a shooting incident on Wednesday night which nearly claimed the life of a 74-year-old Barataria man.

According to police reports, the 74-year-old was driving his green Nissan AD Wagon in the Beetham Gardens in the vicinity of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, when at about 9:45 pm that day, he came under fire by two armed assailants.

The pensioner told police that he observed two men exit bushes near the church, one of whom was said to be armed with a handgun while the other appeared to be armed with a rifle.

Several loud explosions were then heard and then the two men fled in a northerly direction across the Priority Bus Route and into Laventille.

The terrified 74-year-old continued to drive, thankful that he was still alive, however, his vehicle stalled a short while later.

Upon exiting the vehicle and checking, the victim observed several bullet holes to the front of his vehicle, as well as damage to the engine, radiator, and transmission.

The police were notified and officers from the Besson Street Police Station quickly responded and were on location.

Thankfully the 74-year-old man was not injured in the incident.

The vehicle was towed away from the scene and was expected to be examined by crime scene investigators.

More on this as it becomes available.
