National Security Minister Stuart Young received a visit from US Southern Command (SOUTCHCOM) officials following the arrival of the US hospital ship, the USNS Comfort.
The Ministry of National Security said in a statement issued Monday that Lieutenant General Michael T. Plehn, Military Deputy Commander, U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), visited the Ministry's Head Office on Abercromby Street, Port of Spain on September 9.
Lieutenant General Plehn was accompanied by other senior U.S. military officials for their trip aboard the US Navy Hospital Ship Comfort.
Young took the opportunity to express heartfelt thanks to the SOUTHCOM team for their service to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Lieutenant General Plehn reaffirmed the positive bilateral relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America in countering threats to the region.
Both parties welcomed further opportunities for security cooperation.
The USNS Comfort has been on a five-month deployment in Latin America and the Caribbean region, providing medical assistance and support to regional partners in response to the regional impact of the current crisis in Venezuela. The vessel will depart Trinidad and Tobago on September 10.
